17 - What is Web Design?

Web design pertains to the creation of a website including all the elements required to produce a page as seen by computer users. While the physical elements include text, images, digital media as well as interactive components, the web design process itself includes all the activities rendered from the time of conceptualization up to the point of advertising. In between these two are the critical steps of planning, production, post-production, and research. A good website is a product of careful thinking, ample preparation, and rigorous promotion.

Web designing is about writing a language that computers will understand. This is primarily achieved by utilizing a mark-up language such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. HTML which stands for Hyper Text Mark Up is used for structure while CSS which means Cascading Style Sheet is used for presentation. Enabling interactivity so that web pages can be read by web browsers are facilitated through languages such as JavaScript.

The most widely used standard at present is the XHTML which means Extensible Hyper Text Mark Up. It is able to support various browsers including Internet Explorer 9, Google Chrome, Safari, Opera, and Mozilla Firefox, as well as browsers run on small devices such as mobile phones. A well-rounded web designer must have knowledge of the technologies that will allow users to find a website on their search for information.

Aspects of Web Design
The term “web design” is not to be construed merely in relation to the physical appearance of a website. Although aesthetic design is part of the efforts done by a web designer, there are still other aspects that need to be looked into. These include the relevance of the information found on the site, the organized and simplified presentation of the contents, ease of site navigation, and the site’s visibility to search engines. The availability of website builder software in the market has made it possible for many website owners to develop their own sites without necessarily getting the services of a professional web designer.

Any web designer worth his salt should have solid knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, CGI Programming, XML, SEO, Cold Fusion Scripting, Design, Content, Speed, Server Management, E-Commerce and Conversions, as well as web strategy and marketing. He should be able to pick the right technology suitable to a site since there is not one formula that will work for all.

A web design company is focused on a site’s Internet marketing campaign and has every interest in having it succeed. It is expected to use a combination of technologies that will help create the appropriate web pages that a site’s target market will appreciate and come back for, over and over again. Every site needs to fill in the requirements of website owners, website users, and web browser developers, simultaneously if possible. The development of a website requires the use of fundamental common technologies as well as more current ones. This is because not all computer users will have access to the same level of technology. Making the site flexible as to accessibility and adaptability to the most number of people should be one of the primary objectives of any site.

A website user’s need is quite basic. They simply want to see a web page that contains the information they need in a format that is easily seen and obtained. With the vast choices of sites available online, any sign of difficulty in accessing a site and its content is highly detrimental to its aimed success. A good website design is expected to ensure success.
