Writing Content With SEO In Mind
Writing web content with search engine optimization in mind is something that comes with practice. While a good writer can come up with excellent articles and material to be included in a web site, it does not necessarily mean that the finished product is going to perform well in terms of search engine results. However, if there is one thing that is misunderstood about writing content with SEO in mind, it is that oftentimes, writers think primarily about the search engines. The result is often stilted writing that may even sometimes not make sense. And, when this happens, the reader – the human reader – is not satisfied with the content, making everything not worth the effort.
What do you have to consider when writing web content when SEO is your goal?
The bottom line really is this: write with your human readers in mind! If you think about it, the goal of search engines is to pick out web sites which will offer readers the information that they need. Their goal is also to provide quality and relevant information to those who are seeking it. In this sense, you and the search engines have the same aim. Do not make the mistake of over optimizing your web site such that human readers will not find it useful anymore. When that happens, even search engines will not find much use for your web site anyway.
Here are some tips that can help you write web content and achieve decent success in regard to search engine optimization.
Make sure your content is relevant. You may think that this is a no brainer, but it is so easy to write something that may not be entirely relevant or timely. You can always focus on search terms and just sprinkle them throughout the page. You can even write about something entirely different from what your web site is all about. It’s all up to you. At the end of the day, however, you will be found out. And when that happens, you’ll have to face the consequences – you’ll probably get low rankings and you might even get banned! More so, your readers will immediately know what you’re up to and you won’t be getting any return visitors anyway.
Try to get your keywords at the beginning of the page. The more keywords you have, the better. However, you still have to make the article as natural as possible. One way to achieve this is to start off with definitive statements. Some writers use the style of stating their conclusions first and then going back to build their argument. This is a great writing style as it catches the attention of readers easily. More so, it is also a great opportunity to use the keywords as much as you can in the first part of the article. Here’s another related tip: use your main keywords solely in the first part. Using synonyms is perfect as it helps maintain a more natural flow, but try to refrain from using them until you’ve used your main keywords several times first.
Use keywords for your links. Providing links within your articles is a good way to provide additional – and relevant – content for your readers. What you should do, however, is to use related keywords when including links. How many articles have you read which include lines such as “For more information, click here?” While that helps readers, it is much better in SEO terms to use relevant words for the hyperlinks. For example, if your article is all about SEO, do not say, for more information, click here. Instead, write something like, “to find out more, check out this SEO tutorial,” with the link included in the phrase SEO tutorial.
Proofread! I cannot emphasize this enough. So many good writers do not have the habit of reading their work once they’re finished. This may be due to habit or lack of time, but the idea is to always make sure that the words are spelled correctly. This is even more important when it comes to your keywords. All your SEO efforts will be in vain if your writing is riddled with typos – especially if you misspell the words that are supposed to be entry points to your page! A couple of minutes spent in proofreading your work will be well worth it.
Again, bear in mind that writing with SEO in mind does not necessarily mean that you have to write badly. It’s all in how you approach the matter. At the end of the day, you will always have to work within certain rules, but you can always still provide good quality content to your human readers. All you need is a little imagination and some practice. These will get you a long long way in terms of SEO.
