In a state that has traditionally kept a wary eye on art and directed it in its own interests, such freedom has appeared a gift of fate. And Russian art has returned the gift: As in the early 20th century, when the Russian avant-garde took the lead in global art, Russian art of the late 20th century displayed a remarkable blossoming. It gave the world richly diverse works: paintings, collages, installations, photographs. The innovation and creativity attracted attention in many Western countries. Hundreds, if not thousands of exhibitions were mounted, contributing a positive image of Russia in the world. Now, it seems, we have to talk about this in the past tense.
