Andrei Erofeyev, curator of contemporary art at the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, was at the epicenter as the initiator of the Paris exhibit. About 20 of the 240 works intended for display in Paris were barred from leaving Russia (one of the banned works comprises 65 separate compositions). The Russian minister of culture, Alexander Sokolov, publicly declared that they were a \"disgrace\" to Russia.
