Sots Art, an ironic blend of \"socialist realism\" (\"sotsrealism\" in the common Russian contraction) and \"Pop Art,\" is an irreverent reflection of official rhetoric, a typical example of which might be a picture putting Lenin in a Coca Cola ad. The movement arose in the 1970s as a parody of the official artistic dogma of socialist realism. This was \"upside-down\" art, which treated Soviet political themes in a free spirit.
